The London College of Garden Design has announced that Jo Thompson will become its new head of garden design studies. She will be joined by Duncan Cargill, who has been appointed deputy head of garden design studies.
Jo Thompson is a renowned garden designer known for her romantic and colour-led approach to garden design. Her work has been showcased at several prominent flower shows, including the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in 2025 and the RHS Badminton Flower Show this month.
New Leadership Team
Jo Thompson and Duncan Cargill will oversee curriculum development, student learning, and industry engagement at the London College of Garden Design. They will continue to work on their own design projects while taking on their new roles at the college.
Duncan Cargill has experience in educating and mentoring designers, and is well-suited to his new role. He is one half of the design studio Cargill Sykes and has a deep commitment to education and professional development.
Exciting New Chapter
The London College of Garden Design is working to strengthen its teaching by hiring practising professionals who already influence the garden design industry.
“It’s a huge honour to be asked to take on this role at the London College of Garden Design,” Jo Thompson said. “I know just how important good guidance and mentorship is, and together with Duncan, I’m looking forward to being able to work with the next generation of garden designers.”
Nina Baxter, director of the London College of Garden Design, said: “Jo has been a tutor and friend to the College since it began nearly 20 years ago and Duncan is one of our own graduates. Both are outstanding designers with a deep commitment to education and professional development.”
Duncan Cargill added: “The Garden Design Diploma has earned a reputation for excellence and professionalism, and it is a privilege to join the leadership team at such an exciting time. I am passionate about helping students bridge the gap between education and practice, giving them the confidence, skills and knowledge needed to build successful careers.”
Jo Thompson and Duncan Cargill will take up their new roles in September 2026, marking the beginning of a new era for the London College of Garden Design’s Garden Design Diploma programme.
