Monty Don announced his departure from Gardeners’ World after 23 years via an Instagram reel with his dog Ned.

Monty Don is stepping down as lead presenter of Gardeners’ World after 23 years on the show. The announcement came via an Instagram reel shared this morning, with Don’s dog Ned by his side in the familiar setting of his garden, Longmeadow.

“I’ve loved every minute and I’ve worked with amazing people and it’s been a joy to share my gardening life, and my dogs, with you,” Don said. “But it’s time for a change.”

A Legacy in Horticulture

Don took over from Alan Titchmarsh in 2003 and has since become one of horticulture’s most recognized figures. Alongside his television work, he has written and produced several gardening series, including Around the World in 80 Gardens and the recent Monty Don’s Rhineland Gardens.

His influence extends beyond the screen. Don designed a show garden at the 2025 RHS Chelsea Flower Show as a tribute to his beloved pets, further cementing his impact on the gardening world.

The Search for a Successor

With Don’s departure, speculation is mounting over who will take the helm of this coveted role in garden media. Several names have emerged as potential successors, each bringing their own unique style and expertise to the table.

Adam Frost, a co-presenter on the show for over a decade, is often seen as a natural fit. His Cockney charm and down-to-earth personality have won him a dedicated fan base. Frost’s recent move to a larger property has reignited discussions about his potential as a lead presenter, a role that traditionally involves hosting from one’s own garden.

Another strong contender is Carol Klein, a former nurserywoman and gardener known for her passionate and infectious enthusiasm for plants. Klein’s name frequently surfaced as a fan favorite during the last leadership change, but her health battles, including a cancer diagnosis in 2025, may influence her decision to take on such a prominent role.

The younger generation of horticulturists is also represented in the speculation. Frances Tophill, who gained prominence after designing a garden for HM The King and the RHS with David Beckham, has stated her disinterest in the top job. However, her recent high-profile success may make her a persuasive candidate.

Jamie Butterworth, a nurseryman who collaborated with Don on the 2025 Chelsea Flower Show, is another rising star. Despite having less screen time than other contenders, his ambition and work ethic are notable.

Other familiar faces from the show include Toby Buckland, who previously held the lead role from 2008 to 2010.

The Contenders’ Journeys

Adam Frost, a long-time co-presenter, has a deep-rooted connection to the show’s history. He trained under Geoff Hamilton, a former lead presenter, who guided his career. Frost’s personal life has seen challenges, including a battle with depression and a move to a smaller property during the pandemic.

Potential Presenters and Their Paths

Several co-presenters have been part of the show’s history, each with unique backgrounds. Despite her success, she has expressed no interest in the lead role.

As the search for Monty Don’s successor continues, the gardening world eagerly awaits the announcement of the new lead presenter.
