The Muuto Design Contest is now open to submissions for its third edition, with a focus on outdoor accessories and smaller furniture that bring a new perspective to outdoor spaces.
Muuto is seeking designs that explore the transition between indoor and outdoor living, blurring the boundaries between inside and outside – physically, emotionally, and sensorially.
The brand is looking for designs grounded in nature, responding to natural surroundings, light, materiality, and tactility, and relating to outdoor or transitional spaces such as terraces, balconies, and gardens.
According to the brand, Scandinavian design is defined as functional, well-crafted pieces with an enduring aesthetic and honest expression, a harmonious blend of form, function, materiality, and tactility.

The winner of the previous Muuto Design Contest, Kihyun Kim, created a project called A Piece of Seating, a gently curving stool that can be a standalone piece or combined to create a shared experience of sitting.
Kim’s design was inspired by the Korean concept of Jeong, a form of shared warmth or connection between people, and the stool’s physical and social functions shift as more units are introduced.
The first prize winner of the contest will see their piece potentially go into production and receive €5,000 in prize money, while two runners-up will receive €2,500 each.
Submissions for the contest are open until 12 October 2026, and designers can submit their entries online.
