Loft bedrooms provide extra space without requiring a larger home footprint. Sloped ceilings, narrow staircases, and irregular angles often complicate the design process. Five recent projects demonstrate how architects and designers transformed these challenges into advantages.
Designing with the space’s unique features
Jojo Barr, founder of House Nine Design Studio, describes loft conversions as a puzzle. The solution lies in treating the space’s quirks as opportunities. Awkward angles can be turned into built-in seating, shelving, or bunk beds. Skylights and dormers bring in natural light, making the area feel more open and connected to the rest of the home.
Sarah Davies-Bennion, a senior designer at Kate Guinness Design, notes that furniture selection is especially important. Stairs leading to lofts are frequently narrow, making it difficult to move large pieces. She points out that replacing items later is more complicated than on the ground floor, where windows allow easier access.
Sean Symington, an interior designer, advises extending the main flooring into the loft to maintain continuity. He also suggests experimenting with textures—plush rugs, soft furnishings, and rattan lamps—to enhance comfort. Colors and patterns can add personality while ensuring the space remains practical.
Lighting plays a key role. Laura Stephens, an interior designer, highlights the value of natural light. Wall lights and directional lamps create ambiance, while lighter tones help reflect available light. A cohesive color scheme can make an irregular space feel deliberate rather than awkward.

London terrace transformation
A London couple sought to add a bedroom, dressing area, and bathroom to their loft. Rider Stirland Architects delivered a compact yet open design. Warm neutrals and storage built into the eaves create a relaxed atmosphere. Strategic partitions separate the bedroom from the dressing area while forming a spacious shower in the bathroom.

Versatile loft with daybed and reading corner
Laura Stephens created a loft that functions as a guest room, office, and reading nook. The centerpiece is a daybed from John Lewis, which expands into a double bed. A custom headboard adds a personal touch. Built-in storage beside the daybed keeps the area organized, while a small fireplace in the reading corner serves as a focal point.
The original floorboards were sanded and painted white to soften the room’s edges. Subdued tones and mixed textures—vintage-inspired details and soft fabrics—give the space character without overwhelming it. Stephens aimed to ensure the loft felt as carefully designed as the rest of the home. “I wanted to create a retreat that feels both cozy and uplifting,” she says.
Primary suite with elegant details
A London loft conversion dedicates an entire floor to a primary suite. Two dormers divide the space into sections for the bedroom and an open-plan bathroom with a separate WC.

Coastal-inspired loft in South Devon
Hutley & Humm renovated a cottage in South Devon, drawing from the coastal surroundings. The loft conversion continues the theme with a salty blue hue and painted timber. The bedroom features Farrow & Ball’s Green Blue paint, while the headboard fabric—a lime green and blue stripe—adds a burst of color. Swing-arm wall lights from Ralph Lauren offer adjustable lighting.
Melissa Hutley, co-founder of the firm, says the ensuite bathroom uses a sliding door to save space. A stable-style door adds character and complements the panelled walls. The bathroom’s pink wallpaper and glossy zellige tiles create a warm, enveloping atmosphere. Brass and marble accents introduce opulence.
A full-width dormer was added to provide extra headroom for the bathroom. The original chimney was exposed and painted, adding charm to the room. A natural fiber carpet and neutral pink palette maintain a calm environment, while a desk overlooks a Juliet balcony.
